About
‘Dove Lake’ was created in collaboration with Taiwanese dancer Yu-Feng Lai (Century Contemporary Dance Company) as part of Nibroll Dance Lab 2023, an international exchange between Japan and Taiwan. During the process Anna Kuroda and David Kirkpatrick visited Taiwan for 1 week, then Lai visited Japan for a 2-week residency at MPP Totsuka. Dove Lake premiered as part of Nibroll’s Dance Lab 2023 at SCOOL, a white box gallery-style venue in Tokyo. The duration is 30 minutes and involves 2 dancers, sound and projection.
The work is based on a visit to Dove Lake in Tasmania, Australia by Kuroda in 2017, where she was inspired by a natural phenomenon of bubbles forming in orderly rows across the lake’s surface.
The water is blue from afar. On approach, amber. Rays of light reflect towards the sky and refract beneath. Leaves fall, submerge, decompose. Bubbles form and are drawn together, rising to the surface, travelling in an infinity mirror of thin lines defying wind and wave. 10 seconds later they are gone.
Time is moving forward but I am thinking of someone in the past.

Anna Kuroda’s new work “Dove Lake” at Mitaka SCOOL. Male-female duo. They grasp the floor or the air by their skin rather than their eyes or ears.
It is a dense dance that can be called a ballroom where you interact with the other person’s presence without touching their body.

I was moved by Anna Kuroda’s choreography “Dove Lake”. A duo with motifs from the natural world, such as lake foam, waves, water surface, light, and wind. The abstract and clear choreography, inspired by outside sources, leaves a strong impression. Unique physical manipulations such as movement using the soles of the feet and the inner motives of the dancers meshed well to create a dense body time.

Dove Lakeは、ニブロールダンスラボ2023の日本と台湾の国際交流の中で、台湾のダンサー ヨウフォンライ（世紀當代舞團）とのコラボレーションで制作されました。その過程で、Murasaki Penguinは台湾に1週間滞在し、ライ氏は横浜MPP戸塚で2週間の滞在制作をしました。 東京三鷹にあるホワイト ボックス ギャラリー スタイルの会場 SCOOL で初演されました。上演時間30 分、ダンサー 2 名、サウンド、プロジェクション。
本作は、黒田が 2017 年にオーストラリアのタスマニア州にあるDove Lakeを訪れた際に、湖の表面に整然と並んだ泡が形成される自然現象に触発されたことに基づいています。
その湖は、遠くから青く、近づくと琥珀色をしている。光の線は空に向かって反射し、水面下へ屈折する。葉は落ちて、沈み、腐る。泡が生まれ、引き寄せられ、上昇し、風と波に逆らい、合わせ鏡の無数の細い線になって水面を移動する。10秒後、それらは消えてなくなっていた。
時は前に進むが、私は過ぎ去った誰かの事を考えている。
