Murasaki Penguin hosted ‘Dancing Decoy and Lining Up — A Trisha Brown Repertory Workshop with Lisa Kraus‘ from the 13th to 14th of April 2024 at Murasaki Penguin Project Totsuka. It was a very special time with the participants and Lisa Kraus from Trisha Brown Dance Company.
Thank you to everyone who travelled to MPP Totsuka from all over Japan. We began planing this project together with Lisa and Jamie from Trisha Brown Dance Company back in 2021 and finally it became real.
2024年4月13日、14日の2日間Murasaki Penguin Project Totsukaでトリシャ・ブラウン レパートリーワークショップ「ダンシング・デコイとライニング・アップ」講師リサ・クラウスを開催しました。参加者のみなさまとトリシャブラウンダンスカンパニーのリサクラウスととても特別な時間を過ごす事ができました。
全国からMPP Totsukaへお越し頂いた皆様、誠にありがとうございました。 2021年からトリシャブラウンダンスカンパニーのリサとジェイミーと一緒に計画してきたこのプロジェクトをついに実現する事ができました。
On day 1 we did an introduction to feeling gravity and falling. Repertoire focused on ‘Solo Olos’ and ‘Lining Up’.
1日目は重力と落ちる感覚の導入から始まりました。レパートリーは「Solo Olos」と「Lining Up」に焦点を当てました
After lunch Lisa ran a lecture that involved watching L’Orfeo and some early Trisha Brown works. Lisa explained how each work was created and we tried some of their choreographic strategies. Lisa gave experimental learned improvisation tasks using Murasaki Penguin Project Totsuka’s dynamic architecture.
午後はレクチャーから始まり「L’Orfeo」、そしてトリシャブラウンの初期の作品を鑑賞しました。 それぞれの作品がどのように制作されたかリサの体験を元に語られ、その後に作品の振り付け戦略を実際に試みました。 リサはMPP Totsukaの建築を使った、実験的なラーンドインプロビゼーションの課題を与えました。
We split into 3 groups. Group 1 performed in the studio, 2 on the stairs to the foyer and 3 outside the building. The experiments by each group were amazing. We were very excited to see how the building seemed to change its atmosphere according to the dancers’ movements.
3組に分かれ、 グループ 1 はスタジオ、グループ 2 はロビーの階段、グループ 3 は建物の外でパフォーマンスをしました。それぞれのグループの実験が素晴らしく、建物がダンサーの動きによって変化していく様に感じられてとても興奮しました。
Afterwards we repeated ‘Solo Olos’ material over and over, observing movement details and letting them sink into our bodies.
その後は、「Solo Olos」の振付を繰り返し踊り、動きの細部をみて、じっくりと身体に落とし込んでいきました。
Day 2 started with a hands-on warm-up with a partner, referencing Steve Paxton’s words. We then learned material from ‘Glacial Decoy’.
2日目はスティーブパクストンの言葉を参考にハンズオンのウォームアップからはじまり、「Glacial Decoy」の振付を習いました。
The second day’s lecture focused on Trisha Brown’s proscenium and later works. Interesting stories were told in response to questions asked by the participants. Question themes included the relationship to music, collaborative production, and the evolution of Trisha’s works over time.
2日目のレクチャーはトリシャブラウンのプロセニアム以降の作品に焦点が当てられました。 音楽との関係性や協働制作について、トリシャ作品の時系列での変遷など参加者それぞれの質問から興味深い話が語られました。
After this we practised Solo Olos and Glacial Decoy choreography. The two-day workshop ended in a crescendo of movement.
その後Solo Olos応用編、Glacial Decoy振付戦略の実践を行いました。2日間のワークショップは激しい身体の動きと共にクライマックスを迎え終了しました。
We received a lot of feedback from the participants and would like to share little.

The overall content was well-balanced, with practical repertoire, lectures, and composition. Lisa and her accurate guidance were wonderful. I would like to take the workshop next time for about 5 days.
レパートリーの実技、レクチャー、コンポジションと、全体のバランスがとても良く内容が充実していた。リサも的確の指導も素晴らしかった。次は5日間程度で是非受けてみたい。

I was able to experience for myself why Trisha Brown’s works have the power to captivate people through her various creative methods. It was truly wonderful how Lisa was able to convey to us what was important to her with her warmth and sincerity.
様々な技法のクリエーション方法から、なぜトリシャブラウンの作品は人を魅了する力があるのかも、体感することができました。リサの温かく、そして大事にしてることは芯をもって、私たちに伝えてくださり本当に素晴らしかったです。

I feel the difficulty and joy of creating “form” and “quality” at the same time, and I also find it difficult to go back and forth between the inside and outside, trying to create relationships with other people and architecture, and I realised once again that this is the joy of dance.
「かたち」と「質」を同時にのせていく難しさと楽しさを感じ、かつ他の人や建造物とも関係性を結ぶことを試みるという内と外の行き来が難しくもあり、ダンスの楽しさでもあるなと改めて体感しました。

I can learn material from a video, but there’s nothing like the joy of receiving dances directly from person. In particular, Glacial Decoy was complex and interesting. Trisha’s choreography is of course interesting to watch, but it’s even more interesting when you actually dance it, and you realise even more how amazing Trisha is at creating such choreography… I received a truly special gift.
ビデオから振り起しをしてでも踊りますが、やっぱり人から直接もらえる喜びは半端ないです。特にGlacial Decoyはより複雑でおもしろかったです。Trishaの振付は観てももちろんおもしろいですが、実際に踊ってみるともっとおもしろくて、そんな振付を創れるTrishaのすごさをますます実感します。…本当にスペシャルなプレゼントをいただきました。

The participants’ great effort, concentration and curiosity made for dynamic conversation and rich, sophisticated time spent with Lisa Kraus. Luckily we had beautiful weather for the two days. Trisha may have been supporting us from afar. Thank you very much to the participants from all over Japan, and once again to Lisa Kraus, Jamie Scott and Trisha Brown Dance Company.
